Zack's room

Zack has been asking consistently for his own room.  He has written many notes and left them in various places for us to read.  Preston, the big ol' softy said we would do it.  He asked how long it would take and I told him it only took 6 months to build our house so it shouldn't take that long.  HaHaHa!  We are now in December and he's been sleeping on a cot in his bedroom that's taped & textured so far.  This would've been a great quarantine project when we didn't have anything else going on but you know how busy we get in our lives.  Here is the progess so far.  Preston wanted the boys to help so they could learn how to do some construction and useful things they will need to know.  He did have a buddy from work help us get it framed in.

What we did was take down our 3 existing windows in the living/dining room and 2 sliding doors and push that wall out to the big support beam that was our covered porch.  We used one of the windows for Zack's room and used one sliding door.  We will have more room to extend our dining table out like it does that we never had room to do before and won't feel so closed in in the family room when we have get togethers.

Framing for the new exterior wall started August 26th.

You can see how we framed in the exterior wall before taking out the 3 windows here.
Look at the real smile from Zack.

This is how the 2 sliding doors were before but now this is just a wall where Zack's closet will be on the other side of our room.

We had some guys come stucco one weekend.

My dad came and helped Preston put drywall up a couple of days
This is where we are today in the addition.  This will be just an open area where it won't feel so enclosed anymore.
When we were quarantined Preston got lots of mudwork and sanding done.  Probably need at least one more round and then we can start texture.

Christmas

Drew was anticipating his elf's return and pretty sure this was his favorite mess that he made.  He took a few other pictures but they are all on his phone.  For the first time ever, Sunshine looked for his elf when she checked on our chickens and dog while we were gone so Drew got to see what he did.  He put bows all over our kitchen and Drew said we had to leave them up until Christmas and you see that in my pictures.

Once again, the kids chose the Disney World trip as Christmas so there were no presents again and only got things from Santa.
Aydon got a new LSU cup, a game for his new Switch & a Mandalorian tie.  Ty got a football cup that has real football laces, cologne & a Mandalorian tie.
Drew got a glow in the dark basketball cup, a NBA X-box game, his own controller for the switch so they all 4 can play together now and a Bear Grylls knife.  Zack got an Avenger's cup, a .22 rifle & a Bear Grylls knife.
The boys said Presley got spoiled!
Dad had got home after midnight some time and we waited until 7 to wake him up for presents.
Preston got a new .223 pistol and lots of other tools, hunting things and cologne.  I got new dining room chairs, some workout bottoms, a new dress & perfume.

The Baca's gave Presley a Minnie ukelele that she loves!  So do the boys!  They got each of the boys a pair of socks of things they love.  Ty-Yoda, Aydon-American flag, Zack-The Office, Drew-Among Us.
The DeSpain's gave each of them $40.  They gave Preston & I a battery organizer that we filled up immediately and bought us pellets.

Since we didn't get to wear our Mickey Christmas Tree shirts at Disney World we had to wear them today.

We bought a new Christmas tree this year and did LSU again.
I didn't think I'd do anything in this room with all the construction going on but I'm so glad I did.  I finally made myself a Mickey Christmas tree and then my mom made me some felt ornaments to add to it and I bought some small Mickey & Minnie Christmas themed for the tree too.  We used our Cruise gift they gave us and Presley keeps Mickey blow up plugged in all time.

Last Christmas I loved Aunt Earlene's stocking holder she had so when we stayed the night before heading to Texas at her house Uncle Dan said he had one that would be ready when we got back from Texas for me.  I was sooo excited.  I have wanted a stocking holder the last 3 years and just didn't get one made.  It can be used as a blanket holder the rest of the year so I'm so happy about that.  I was so bummed, we came home and looked through the few boxes that were easy to reach but couldn't find our stockings so we have to wait until next year to put them on it.

We made a gingerbread house one night but it fell apart quickly and I can't find the pictures I took.  Aydon did a much better job building his on a date with a girl from Joe City but the kids ate it.
Preston was home long enough to open presents and eat with us and then headed right back to work but it felt good to have him apart of both days still.  That was a plus side of the technology we all have learned to use this year.

Christmas Eve

John's family wanted to play it safe and so we had our gift exhange on Zoom.  It was different but it still worked.  Since Preston was off for 3 weeks he had to work on Christmas Eve but we planned the gift exchange while he was in Belen before he had to work home.  I was happy he got to be a part of it since he didn't last year.  The boys each picked their own gifts and I told them to pick something they would want to win.  Zack took it to heart and when he didn't get the gift he bought, he was not happy and ended up spending some money he earned from the DeSpain's buying his own drone.  Drew put in a $50 bill and won it.  Ty bought a popcorn machine (at one point every single one of the boys had said they wanted that for their gift) and ended up with "Game Night" 3 games (Uno flip, Double Ditto, & Back & 4th).  Aydon bought a book about LSU's winning season by Coach O & 2 LSU insulated cups and strategically waited to pick the National Championship football until the end.  Preston bought a multi tool shovel in a bag that he really wanted but chose a gun lockbox hoping I would get the shovel.  I put in a pair of binoculars and won ladderball.  Presley got laser tag from Sunshine, a homemade Moana pillow and blanket from my parents, & the heart of Tafiti necklace & a Moana toothbrush.
After the gift exchange, we ate gumbo and I made homemade french bread and pecan pie.  Aydon made a cheeseball & Shawna brought queso & a yummy cranberry, pineapple, orange & ginger ale punch.  After we ate, we played the Saran Wrap game Shawna made.  Lots of scratchers, chapstick, hand sanitizer, socks and gum/candy.  We also played the paper plate game where we put a paper plate on our heads and drew a snowman and laughed so hard at how they turned out.  Then we did Mickey Mouse.  Sunshine didn't think we'd play games so she didn't bring anymore that she had planned but I had Moana bingo that I had planned for Presley's party so we played several rounds of that and mom handed out prizes for the winner of each of the games.
My parents decided to leave and then we made sugar cookies for Santa.

Zack was the winner of the Saran wrap game and center was a roll of toilet paper, very fitting for the shortage that occured earlier this year.
Mom gave us LSU checkers and we all took turns playing.

We made the best of COVID Christmas.

5 Daughters Ranch

We didn't get to use the pinata NiceShine bought and we stuffed so we took it with us so the girls could help us bust it.  It worked so well!  Everyone got to pull a string and we started over again and Drew ended up with the final string and pulled it open.

Aunt Earlene had santa hats on the back of her couch and Presley loved putting them on.
First morning, Skye and I were in the kitchen and I could see Preston walking to the ranch by himself in a hurry.  Sure enough, Aydon's dreams came true first morning...he shot an Axis deer!
These are exotic animals that were brought to Texas that are originally from India.  They have spots their whole lives sand are much darker than other deer.  They also have longer antlers.
Ben skinned it so that we could get a rug made out of it!  Ben had Skye fry up the balls and made Ty & Aydon try them.  Ty spit it out but Aydon and the two men got it down.  Aydon said it did taste like chicken but was super rubbery.  He teased and said he should make Grandpa Gary a coin purse from the fur around the balls.
Bailey & Presley checking it out.
When they went out for the evening hunt they were walking to the blind and Ty was on the second step up and said Dad! there they are!  He only saw does but Preston could see the buck so he was able to get a shot.  He got it but then was afraid it was going to run so he shot it two more times and got guts everywhere!

Preston said it was the nastiest thing he'd ever cleaned it was so bad.
The 2nd morning, Zoey got herself an Axis too!  They said there was a big one that Ben was watching and he saw the one next to it go down.  He thought it was a doe but it turned out to be a spike.  She was happy to finally get one too.  Since the 3 big kids had gotten one we decided to go to Sonora Caverns.  It was cool and Aydon was happy because we got to see the Blackbuck (another exotic animal brought in) they had also told us about.
There was no internet or cell service so there was lots of games and playing but we did turn on a movie every once in a while.  I caught this cute picture of Bailey & Presley Amaya.  They played so well and shared and everyone got along.
Aydon's hide
Zoey's hide

Friday morning they went hunting and moved some feeders, filled them and saw what they needed from town.  Then they went to drop of the heads for european mounts and the axis hides.  Aydon went so he could see the taxidermy place because they said there was a zebra in there and he wanted to see that.  Turns out someone new owns the place now and the zebra was gone but he got to see a Rhino Skull instead.  Zoey & Harleigh went with them but Ty wanted to stay home to hunt.  He asked me or Skye to go with him but I told him he would be fine on his own.  It's a 360 acres all fenced in so you can't get lost.  We had been outside walking to the treehouse & watching the kids play and just walked in to start dinner.  One of the girls ran in and said they heard a gunshot.  I decided I better try to go look for him in case he got something to help him.  I tried to go the opposite direction so in case he missed he could still hunt and didn't see him but by the time I got back he had already ran back to the house for help.  He was so excited!  His adrenaline was pumping and he said I think I shot two.  We rode back there to where he shot one and Presley Skye found blood so he knew where this one was but was worried he shot another so I told him, the sun is setting quickly and you need to see if you can find a blood trail for the other one.  Skye and I tried lifting it and his had smaller antler but it was fatter than Aydon's and with all the cactus we said we better wait and have the guys come get this.  Right at that time Presley Amaya ended up in cactus and was crying.  Skye pulled some out of her pants and then me and Zack took her & Bailey home to pull out the rest.  The guys got back and I told them what happened and they went to help out.  Ty ended up getting his butt ripped by his dad and then those two went out to start working on his deer.  Poor Ty was so excited and had told Skye about all animals he had seen hunting alone and took pictures of and said this was the best trip ever and then got in trouble for not knowing for sure if he killed two Axis so it kind of ruined the moment for him.  I gave them a few minutes and then went out to get pictures.

Checkout that Axis hide on the back of the couch!
Axis mount
Skye had bought all the kids Christmas socks so we had to get a picture of all of them.
Even Zack went out a couple of evenings with Ben & Paizlee to hunt for pigs.  Zack spotted this fox so Ben had him shoot it.  He had a .223 so it was blown up!  He wouldn't touch it though so Ben's holding it for him.
Ben wanted Presley Amaya to come sit with him so bad and finally she did one day.

They had bought us a cornhole board and one for the Ranch.  The kids opened it up and played a few rounds.
The kids have so much riding the four wheeler, side by side and Ranger.
Ty & Presley Skye won!
The last afternoon we processed Aydon & Ty's axis deer and Ty's whitetail.  Skye & Ben said the axis deer is their favorite game meat and I agree...tastes most like beef than any other meat I've tried.  I didn't want the whitetail but they said it's much better than the deer we have at home that I couldn't eat.
We told Aydon & Ty they had to help but Ty wasn't much help.  Preston made lots of roasts for us while the rest of us cut up meat to grind into hamburger.  Luckily, Skye & Ben had Brisket fat and crumbled beef fat already in their freezer so we were able to do all 2 1/2 deer and freeze it to take home the next day.  It was dark by the time we finished so they said they'd just take Zoey's to be processed later.

Preston took another picture of Aydon to show the spots better

And a different angle of Ty's.
It'll take a couple of months for the mounts and like 4 months for the hides so we can't wait!  Aydon said we could hang his on our wall until he gets married and gets his own place.  Preston is so excited!  He really wanted pillows made out of it so I told him he'll have to plan another trip and get his own to do that.  He wanted a barbery sheep (Aoudad) really bad but never even saw one.  He was following Ben one day but he drives slower to look for animals and missed the biggest one Ben's ever seen.  Drew got to go hunting too but didn't shoot at anything.  They saw baby axis deer & does and laughed at their walk.  They also saw whitetail does.  I went out one day while they were fixing the feeders just to see their property and I went to a blind and watched a whitetail eating for a long time.  Ben & Zoey both killed some pigs as well but they don't keep those.  We had so much fun.  It was a 10 drive from their house so it's long but it was so worth it.  Everyone enjoyed our time with them at their Ranch.

An Axis spike that he passed on
He said he saw a bigger Axis than the one he got, that's the one he thought he might have killed but they went and looked the next morning and never found blood or an animal.

Preston hopes that we will be invited back another time so he gets his chance.
