Back in the years where we spent the majority of our time working on landscaping, Aydon wanted a yellow apple tree. Yellow because it's his favorite color (notice the yellow hunting glasses he's wearing in the picture...just because they were yellow!) and he's always loved fruit. I remember planting this tree for him on Earth Day and he was so excited. I think that year we may have gotten 2 apples. In the following years if we were able to keep the boys from picking the "pretty flowers" in the spring time we would only get another 1 or 2 apples and usually lose them to birds before we could get them.
My dad had told us about bloom set and this year Aydon begged us to get some. We did and Preston sprayed all the blooms in spring time. We were amazed when we saw this tree FINALLY loaded with apples.
We took a first taste about a month ago and they were edible, tart, but edible. Truth is, I love a granny smith apple for its tartness. We have pulled a few to eat, especially after buying some caramel to dip it in. We shared some and each time Aydon shared he asked for the grannies to bake him an apple pie.
Vickey called Aydon over and had him bake the pie. He was so excited. She taught him how to pinch the edges and put the slits in the top. Grandpa Gary insisted he put some fork holes on the top too. :) He was so proud, he walked in the door and asked if we were ready to eat his awesome apple pie. We ate it after celbrating Ty, Betty & Vickey's birthdays and Aydon ate 3 slices in that one evening!
